How to Frame, Display and Care for Your Live Wedding Painting
After the wedding, your live painting comes home with you. A well-made acrylic painting on good canvas can last for generations – if it is framed, hung and cared for properly. Here is a simple guide to help your wedding painting look as fresh in twenty years as it did on the night it was painted.
Step 1: Let it rest before framing
Acrylic paint feels dry within hours, but it continues to cure for some days. Keep the painting flat or standing upright in a cool, dry room for about a week before framing. Do not stack anything on it, and avoid wrapping it tightly in plastic while it is fresh.
Step 2: Choose the right frame
- Floating frame: a thin frame with a small gap around the canvas. It looks modern and lets the painted edges show.
- Classic wooden frame: carved or golden frames suit royal, traditional wedding paintings with palace or mandap backgrounds.
- Simple black or white frame: clean and contemporary, ideal for apartments.
- No frame: a gallery-wrapped canvas with painted edges can also look great without any frame.
Glass is generally not needed for acrylic paintings. A good varnish protects the surface while keeping the colours rich.
Step 3: Pick the best wall
The living room is the most popular place, because family and guests see it. Bedroom walls are a more personal choice. Whichever you pick, keep these points in mind:
- Avoid direct sunlight. Strong sun fades colours over the years.
- Avoid damp walls, bathrooms and walls next to kitchens with heavy steam or smoke.
- Hang at eye level. The centre of the painting should be about 57 to 60 inches from the floor.
- Give it space. A painting looks best with some empty wall around it.
Step 4: Light it well
Soft, warm light makes wedding paintings glow. A small picture light above the frame, or a ceiling spotlight angled at the wall, brings out the gold, red and floral details beautifully in the evening.
Step 5: Clean it gently
Dust the painting every few weeks with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth. Never use water, sprays or cleaning liquids on the surface. If the painting ever gets a stain, contact the artist before trying to fix it yourself.
Step 6: Moving or storing the painting
If you shift homes, wrap the painting first in acid-free paper or a soft cloth, then in bubble wrap with the bubbles facing outwards, and protect the corners. Store it upright, never flat under heavy items.
A live wedding painting is an heirloom. A little care today means your grandchildren will see it exactly as you did.
