How Live Wedding Painting Works – Step by Step on Your Big Day

Many couples love the idea of a live wedding painting but are not sure how it actually works. Will the artist get in the way? How does he finish a painting in one evening? What do we need to arrange? This guide walks you through the full process, exactly as it happens at an ArtByMahesh event.

Step 1: The planning conversation

Everything starts with a short call or WhatsApp chat. We ask about your date, city, venue and the function you want painted. We also ask a few personal questions – the colour of your outfits, the theme of the décor and whether you want only the two of you or your family as well.

This is also when we agree on the canvas size and the composition. Some couples want a wide view of the full stage; others want a closer portrait-style scene. Sharing the décor plan or mood board from your decorator helps a lot.

Step 2: Arriving early and setting up

On the day, the artist reaches the venue well before the function. The setup is simple: an easel, a canvas, a small table for paints and brushes, and a little space to step back and look at the work. We choose a spot with a clear view of the stage that does not block guests, photographers or the videographer.

Step 3: Painting the background first

Before the couple even arrives on stage, the artist starts with the background – the stage structure, flower walls, drapes, lights and mandap. This is the reason a live painting can be finished in one evening: the setting is blocked in while guests are still arriving.

Step 4: Capturing the main moment

When the couple comes on stage for varmala, or sits in the mandap for pheras, the artist focuses on them. Outfits, poses, jewellery and expressions are painted while the moment is actually happening. Reference photos taken on the spot are used for small details later in the evening, but the feeling and composition come from the live scene.

Step 5: Guests watch the canvas come alive

This is the part guests remember. People gather around the easel, take photos and videos, and come back every half hour to see the progress. Grandparents, kids and friends all enjoy it. Many guests tell the couple later that the live painting was the highlight of the evening.

Your guests do not just see a painting at the end – they watch your wedding being painted, brush stroke by brush stroke.

Step 6: Final details and the reveal

As the function comes to an end, the artist adds the finishing touches – highlights on the jewellery, light on the flowers, final details on faces. The painting is then revealed to the couple, often with family gathered around. It is one of the most emotional moments of the night and makes for beautiful photos.

Step 7: Drying, finishing and taking it home

Acrylic paint dries quickly, but a fresh painting still needs careful handling. If you want, the painting can get a final touch-up, a protective varnish and framing after the event before it is delivered to you.

What you need to arrange

  • A space of about 6 x 6 feet with a clear view of the stage.
  • A light source if the artist's corner is dark (most venues already have enough light).
  • A table and a chair.
  • The function timings, so the artist knows when the couple will be on stage.

How long does it take?

Most live wedding paintings are created over three to five hours, depending on the canvas size and how detailed the scene is. Bigger compositions with family members may receive final touches in the studio after the event.

Frequently asked questions

Will the live painter disturb our photographer?

No. The artist sets up at the side of the venue and coordinates with your photo and video team so that nobody blocks anybody.

Can the painting be done at an outdoor venue?

Yes. Outdoor haldi, mehendi and day weddings work beautifully. For outdoor night events, the artist only needs a light near the easel.

Do we need to pose for the artist?

Not at all. You enjoy your function normally. The artist paints you as you are in the moment.
